It has been my goal over the last several years to get a good set of general woodworking tools. I’ve been slowly building a collection up. At first, I thought I would just get a general tool set and be done with it. I got a hammer, a few saws, a few screwdrivers, clamps, knives, and other basic hand tools. When I finally started woodworking, however, I realized that this didn’t even begin to cut it. Depending on the project, you may need a wide variety of different general woodworking tools.

The approach I’ve had since then has been to borrow before I buy. There is a tool lending library in my neighborhood, so I can get pretty much any general woodworking tool I want from their if I’m willing to wait a little bit to get it and return it on time. I try it out, see how it works, and decide I want one. Usually, I buy one of my own. I knew that I had to get a cordless drill after seeing how much having one made my life easier, for example. When I borrowed a reciprocating saw from that shop, I also was convinced to buy one of my own. It made it so much easier to cut and shape wood.
